The rustic image of the hand plow tells us that this sack was owned by a farmer. On a recent visit to my home country Germany, I was very excited to find a small, out of print book on the history of these sacks - now one of my most prized possessions! During the nineteenth century, professional sack painters would wander from one village to th

Farmer's Daughter © John SloaneFor a farmer's daughter, practical learning came as much from day-to-day experience in the garden as any book-learning in school. In this scene, the young farm girl is reaping the rewards of her hard work all summer long. This painting reminds us that nurturing something is hard work, but always worth the effort, and is appreciated in many unseen ways.
